12v garden lighting means that the mains voltage, reduced from 240v, via a transformer down to 12 or 24 volts. This is a very safe voltage incapable of providing fatal shock and therefore allows the use of flexible cables around the garden, rather than the fixed cabling required for mains voltage systems.
The MR16 lamps used with 12v low voltage though small produce more light than traditional counterparts did such as the PAR 38 tungsten lamps do. Using Dichroic MR16 means garden spotlights can be smaller in design and therefore more discreet when placed in the garden.
Additionally due the Dichroic, the reflective effect of the reflector of these lamps, more light than heat finds itself directed forward with most of the heat drawn away towards the rear of the lamp consequently projecting less heat onto plants, which may have a negative effect.
We always recommend talking to your electrician/lighting designer to establish the best type of lighting for your garden areas.
