Looking to replace your lighting with LED lights but no sure what the term colour tempreature means?
LED light Bulbs are classified by the colour of the light they emit. The lower the colour temperature the warmer the light appears, the higher the colour tempreature the colder the light appears; so the word 'warm' 'cold' refers to the psychological attributes of lighting rather than the physical temperature.
There is an official scale to measure colour temperature called the Kelvin scale, or 'K.' Lights between 2,700 to 3,500 kelvins are described as warm, and bulbs over 3,500 are neutral. Anything above that is considered cool.
Colour temperature is the shade you see when the light hits a neutral surface and our eyes can pick up if lights are a cool shade or warmer hue.
Where to use warm light?
Warm light is better in rooms that have a relaxed ambiance such as the dining and living room. This is because the warmer light creates an inviting cosy atmosphere.
For this reason, warmer lights are a great fixture to have in the bedroom, because they create a cozy atmosphere that the human mind associates it with warmth & comfort.
Most incandescent bulbs produce a warmer light, so if you are replacing these with LED lamps, then you may want to keep the room lit similarly.
Which areas suit neutral lighting?
Kitchens and bathrooms suit natural lights because they provide crisp and clear light for preparing food and cooking, or applying makeup and shaving in the bathroom.
When cool light is better?
Rooms such as studies benefit most from cool lighting which are similiar to natural daylight, this can help to promote concentration.
Brighter lights can help people to read and write without straining their eyes which is an important health and safety consideration. Within the workplace there are set rules on light levels.
The colour temperature of lights in your house is an important consideration, but it may also come down to personal preference as some people prefer warmer interior lighting that mimic the traditional colour tones of incadescent light bulbs. LEDs and LED lighting are a great way to have versatility and lower running costs within your home.
